Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?
It is true that in today’s fast-paced world, young people increasingly spend their spare time using devices such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops. While this development has both advantages and disadvantages, I believe that the drawbacks outweigh the benefits.
On the one hand, it is beneficial to use modern tools in a variety of fields such as education, medicine and engineering. These devices help people to communicate with one another easily and quickly over long distances. Furthermore, many professionals are able to achieve their career goals with the help of these gadgets. For example, teachers can easily conduct their lessons using online resources. In turn, children can access useful online books and other educational materials.

The best reading speed
Before we come to the best reading speed, let’s look at the two speeds that cause problems for IELTS candidates:
1. Too slow: Reading each word as a separate item
People with a lower level of English often read word by word, translating each individual word as they go. If you read like this in the IELTS test, you’ll go too slowly and you probably won’t finish all of the questions.
2. Too fast: Skimming and scanning
Basically, when you skim or scan, you are not really reading. It’s easy to miss what you’re looking for, and you are unlikely to truly understand the passage.
The best reading speed
I recommend that you practise reading phrase by phrase. Instead of seeing each individual word as a separate ‘item’, try to group words into natural or logical phrases as you read a sentence.
For example, here’s how I ‘hear’ the sentence at the top of this lesson when I read it to myself:

I read the sentence as three phrases, and my brain adds a little ‘processing pause’ between them. At this speed, I’m reading quite quickly, but I understand everything perfectly.

The US government agency NASA, for example, has a yearly budget of several billion dollars, which is spent on technology, research and development, personnel, facilities management, and a host of other activities and overheads. We saw this in the 20th century when the United States and the Soviet Union engaged in a so-called ‘space race’ that was about national pride and global dominance, rather than the public good.

It takes years or even decades of investment in research and technological development before a nation’s space agency can even consider launching a new space craft. The US government agency NASA, for example, has a yearly budget of several billion dollars for their work in areas as diverse as rocket fuels and robotics. The two maps compare the layout of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and at the present time.
It is clear that in 1950 the farm’s only purpose was agriculture, whereas today it is also engaged in tourism and energy generation. The most significant change since 1950 has been the repurposing of the large sheep field.
Looking at the 1950 map, we see that roughly fifty per cent of Beechwood Farm’s land was used for sheep grazing. This large field, covering the northern half of the farm, is now divided into a camping field on the west side, and a field of solar panels to the east. The two fields also have their own car parking areas.
To the south of the area described above, the original farm track has been made into a road that provides access to the farm from the main road. A farm shop has been built in the fruit tree field next to the main road, and the three fruit and vegetable fields between the farm road and the river remain unchanged. Finally, in the south-east corner of the farm, the 1950 farmhouse and chicken coop occupy the same locations today, but the former barn is now a row of holiday cottages, and a new barn has been constructed to replace it.

The modern marathon has its origins in a story from ancient Greece. According to legend, a messenger named Pheidippides ran from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce a Greek victory over the Persians in 490 BC. After delivering the message, he is said to have collapsed and died from exhaustion. Although historians continue to debate whether this event really happened, the story became widely known across Europe many centuries later and eventually inspired the creation of the modern marathon race.
The marathon became an official event at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Organisers wanted an event that would create a strong connection between the modern Olympics and the ancient Greek world. The race was designed to follow a route similar to the one described in the legend of Pheidippides, and it quickly became one of the most popular Olympic competitions. At that time, however, the distance was not fixed and varied between different events.
The modern distance of 42.195 kilometres was established after the 1908 Olympic Games in London. The marathon became an official event at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. If you’re trying to improve your listening score, stop searching for techniques! Spend your time listening to as much English as possible. Expose your ears to the language and they will gradually become better at hearing it.
You’ll develop a good ear too.
